The Toledo War Between Michigan and Ohio

Thursday, May 30, 2019

The Toledo War was one of the strangest, as well as bloodless, wars ever. Meet folks like Major Stickney, who named his sons One and Two and his daughters Indiana and Florida. The fighting itself was thwarted by the Great Black Swamp, in which militias formed by Michigan and Ohio to battle for the town of Toledo both got lost for two weeks and never engaged in battle. The closest they got was yelling taunts at each other across the Maumee River. Battle gear included a barrel of whiskey and broom handles from the local hardware store. The only casualties were vegetables and unfortunate farm animals. Somehow, Michigan persevered and traded Toledo for the Upper Peninsula, passed go and finally became a bona-fide state in 1837. This presentation will be given by Michigan author Alan Naldrett.
